Cloud Computing May Be The Next Great Thing - There Are Still Reasons For Using A Dedicated Server

By Angel Hebert Talley

Dedicated servers are used for many different purposes and have been around since the advent of the Internet. Granted original dedicated servers are vastly different from today, the concept is still the same. The common misconception is that dedicated servers only have one job. However a server can handle many tasks at once. Servers can be used for any of the following requirements.

Server hosting is very often used for websites. A single server can host one single server or many. As Linux is thought as more secure, web hosting servers normally run this operating system. It is also cheaper to run due to not having to pay for a license for the operating system. You have the choice of reseller or shared hosting packages. Shared hosting works from a single account. Reseller accounts let you host multiple accounts.

Server hosting is also used for databases. The server can be setup to run one of many database engines depending on the operating system. MySQL is normally used with web hosting servers. However, there is also InnoDB, Oracle, and also a Microsoft database engine. Most of the websites on the internet are powered by databases.

Online gaming servers are what allow you to play you favourite games online with your friends. There are many advantages of using a dedi server over home PC for game hosting, such as better ping. This leaves the dedicated server to bear the load. Connectivity is an important reason for choosing a dedicated server. Dedicated servers hosted in a datacentre normally have excellent bandwidth.

Another use for a dedicated server is as a file server. If you are a regular Internet user, you will have been linked to photos on the net. There are websites that utilises file servers to store these photos. The owners normally make their money through banners. File servers also host applications and programs. The final use of server is for voice over IP. From Teamspeak to Mumble, VOIP is a growing trend on the net. Once voice server software is installed, it runs as a service on a dedicated server. Home users can then connect directly to the server for excellent smooth communication.

Recently dedicated servers have come under scrutiny, with cloud software being the new technology to embrace. Cloud software groups multiple servers and splits up resources for supposedly better reliability, and definitely for scalability. However given the amount of server hosts still around, dedicated servers are still the popular choice of the Internet enthusiast.
