A Few Different Forms Of Colocation Packages

By Dusty Bentley

It's very often suitable to rent a number of dedicated servers to suit a hosting requirement. Because with dedicated server rental you are also renting the hardware, you can save money by opting for colocation. Colocation means you pay for the hardware up front, but long term you save by just renting rackspace and bandwidth. So what are the different types of colocation package available? We will look at the biggest packages, through to the smallest.

The absolute top 'colocation package', so to speak would be to rent a datacentre. Having your own datacentre is a very complicated job- you'll need to sort out connectivity, power and security from the ground up. Due to cost and practicality, this option is ruled out for most businesses. Datacentres range in from size from a dozen racks, to thousands of racks spread across multiple floors.

If a datacentre doesn't fit your budget, you can always consider a private cage or suite. This ensures your individual racks are locked away. This way you are separated from other customer's racks.

If a lockable cage or suite is a bit over the top, then you can look at renting your own racks. Normally a rack will be around 40U of space, and you will have up to 16 amps of power. Typically, within these confinements you would be able to host around 30 servers. Servers are becoming more power efficient these days to to the rising power of costs and concerns about the environment. Racks are fully secured- locked back and front which gives piece of mind that you are isolated in your very own private space.

A full rack might not be the best bet if you are only hosting a few servers- and you might instead consider quarter or half lockable racks. These offer considerable price savings over a full rack, while still offering the security a full rack offers. Often you can find lockable racks share the same power feed as full racks. For peace of mind, it is always worth having your own power feed.

For those with only a couple of servers, lockable racks might be a bit too much. Don't worry though, there is a simple colo package for you. Many companies will rent out proportions of a full rack allowing you to buy shared rackspace. Sold by the U, you can house anywhere from 1U through to a 4U server. Check before you sign up, to ensure your colo provider allows supervised access. Do consider that if you are in a shared rack, you are sharing power and bandwidth with other customers.

The various colocation packages demonstrate the choice you have with colo. Whatever your requirement- there should be a colo package to match.
