The Game of Go: A New Paradigm For Business Strategy?

By Adrian Lester

Have you heard of the game of Go? It's a fascinating board game that can be enjoyed by two players of any age. The game is at least 2,500 years old, but is becoming very popular recently. Many people have discovered that playing it is a fun way to improve mental abilities like memory and concentration. Playing the game also increases creativity. What is Go and why should I play it? Let me tell you what you need to know.

Go originated in China, where it is known as 'weiqi'. After that it spread to Korea, where it's called 'baduk', and Japan, where they call it 'igo'. These words basically mean 'surrounding game' in their respective languages. That was thousands of years ago, but more recently the game was introduced to the western world through Japan. That's where the name 'Go' came from. Let's take a more detailed look at why it is very popular right now.

Go is fun for players of all skill levels and age groups: Even if you only just learned to play the game, you can still enjoy it. The handicap system even means that you can play with a more experienced player and both of you will have a challenging and enjoyable game. You don't need to learn everything at once, but as you improve, you will find the depth of the game continues to challenge you. The best way to start is to get a friend to play with you, so you can both learn together. But even if you don't have any friends who want to play with you, you can still play on the web or find a local Go club in your city.

Go exercises and improves your ability to focus and remember things. Research has shown that playing Go improves brain function for people of all age groups. The game helps prevent memory loss in older people and improves young peoples' ability to learn and do well at school. No matter what your age is, playing regularly can help you. Most board games require strong problem solving and logical skills, but not so much creativity. Go is different. When players in Japan had their brains scanned as part of a study, it was discovered that playing the game required both sides of the brain and that it strengthens creativity as well as logic.

Go teaches you to think strategically: Somebody once said that 'if Chess is a battle, Go is a war'. Go has more strategic depth than other board games because it gives the players more freedom to play whatever moves they want. It has been said to resemble business, politics, war, debating and the stock market. What you see in it really depends on your interests and perspective. Playing regularly teaches you to control your emotions and make strategic decisions. This is a great benefit in all aspects of life.

This article only scratches the surface of the game of Go, but I encourage you to learn more. Now that you know what Go is, tell a friend about it and play some games together. It's easy to get started and I promise you that you'll be glad you did. Learning how to play has changed many people's lives for the better and I recommend it to everyone. Good luck!
