Hardware Performance Issues Can Slow A PC's Performance

By Monica Keller

If you are having an issue with a computer's hardware it can have an effect on your PC by slowing it down and even bringing on freeze-ups. Your computer's processor has to direct any attached hardware what to do, when to do it, etc. This will include printers, monitors, keyboards etc.

For a printer and PC to operate in conjunction, print software and drivers will need to be installed onto the computer. If the printer's software gives trouble it can cause problems for the other aspects of the computer.

Recently I came across a good example of this condition. The PC causing the trouble was connected to a combination printer, copier, scanner and fax unit. Because of the multiple uses there was a "suite" of drivers loaded onto the computer to make all these separate features functional. And here lies a problem... at least sometimes. It gets complicated.

The program software began not working correctly and asking for an update. The update would download but when it attempted to install it would stop and say it was unable to. There was also a Windows update that would not install properly that was apparently part of a fix for the printer from Windows.

When the problems first appeared the PC could be restarted or the printer cut off and back on and it would go back to work. But it became more and more difficult to get it working like it ought to. The scanner function had totally stopped working with the pc saying it could not find the unit for a scan even with it still able to print.

After attempting updates from the printer company's internet site for a fix and from Windows with no success we went on to the last option. We fully un-installed (using the Windows utility in Tools) and then re-installed the printer program software from the CD that originally came with it when it was new. But remember to uninstall all sections of the printer suite to begin with.
