The Features Offered by the Apple iPad 2.

By Leah Miles

Apple has built quite a reputation for itself for innovation in phones and computers and the Apple iPad 2 is a great example of the combining of the two. The iPad 2 is just the latest version of something that was quite stir-worthy when it was first released in 2010. Even though a great number of people bought the original iPad, lots of people waited until the second generation came out because they figured that it would solve any glitches found in the original generation. The focus of this review is going to be about both the benefits and the drawbacks of the Apple iPad 2, whether you bought the original or waited.

Apple is well known for making devices that are lightweight and attractively designed. Yet one complaint some people had regarding the original iPad was that it was bulky to carry around. The iPad 2, then was created to be thinner and more compactly designed--a real improvement over it's original version. iPads are, after all, supposed to be portable devices that people enjoy carrying around, using in cafes, planes and pretty much anywhere else they go. There is about a fifteen percent weight drop in the iPad 2 from the first iPad which might seem minor but is major when you have to carry something around all day long. This means that, with the iPad 2, Apple has successfully created a lighter and more compact portable tablet device.

The iPad 2 has 512 MB RAM which is twice as much as the original iPad. This means that you'll have an easier time browsing the web because Internet pages and graphics will load faster and easier. For most everyday uses, the memory difference isn't going to be all that noticeable, but when you play games or other things that involve the use of lots of RAM, it can be very significant. Watching and editing videos, going through photos, etc will use up lots of memory so having twice as much as you did before is a major difference in the power of the device. Of course, if you already own an iPad, this may not be reason enough for you to upgrade to an iPad 2, but it makes this model more appealing for first time buyers.

As with all Apple products, there are quite a few accessories you can buy for the iPad 2. One of the most popular of these is the Smart Cover, which serve as both protection and decorations for the device. The covers come in all sorts of different colors, are durable but thin and adhere magnetically to the iPad. Some users might also want to purchase the Apple Wireless Keyboard which makes it a lot easier to type on the iPad and gives you the option to type while in both landscape and portrait modes. Another accessory you might want to consider is the Apple Digital AV adapter, which allows you to connect your iPad to your HDTV for watching videos. Of course, the iPad 2 is not cheap, and if you plan on buying accessories you have to add these to the final price tag.

The Apple iPad 2 is a fabulous gadget that has lots of appeal and it's easy to want one when you see someone else using it or see an ad for it on television. Still, it's not that hard to go on living without it, particularly when you own your own notebook computer and smart phone. Whether the Apple iPad 2 is a worthwhile investment depends on how much you value its sleek design and the many entertaining and convenient features it offers.
