What are some of the things that you can do with a Nintendo DSi?

By John Klein

When the very first Nintendo DS was released, the world grabbed onto it for it was the first handheld to have dual screens and a touch screen. It has a very immersive game play and unique too. It is still the number one handheld out there with over 149 million units sold while Sony only managed half of that with their PSP. This only proves the point that Nintendo is still king when it comes to portable gaming. With the release of the Nintendo DSi, the world is seeing another great from the company.

The Nintendo DSi has a lot of features in common with the DS Lite. The size and form factor is nearly the same and the sizes of the screen are identical too. But it now sports two 0.3 megapixel VGA cameras. It also more storage space and you can expand it via the SD card. The power has also been increased by 4 times so loading times are now shorter and the graphics are smoother. Together with this, a larger version is also released, the Nintendo DSi XL.

The Nintendo DSi XL is roughly the same as its older rendition but the screens are larger and this means better viewing angles. Battery life is also improved. The software has more features like the Flipnote Studio and also the Nintendo DSi Browser for internet surfing. Whatever you have chosen to buy, there are a lot of things that you can now do with the Nintendo DSi aside from loading a cartridge and playing it.

You can use a Nintendo DSi to listen to music. It has a 3.5 mm audio jack so nearly every headphone can be used and the music player supports plenty of audio formats like AAC and MP3. Even if the lid is closed, you can still listen to music. The Nintendo DSi cannot be a replacement for you iPod, but it has a very interesting feature where you can somehow alter the "texture" of the song. You can make it sound like a radio, echo and even remove the lyrics and listen to the song as an instrumental. You can even listen to a song as an 80's video game sounds.

If you opted for the Nintendo DSi XL, you also do some net surfing with this particular unit. Even though the actual internet surfing experience is lack-luster and does not support Flash, surfing with the big brother is still fun with smooth and fast rendering. It is one way to get to use up some time with you handheld console.

All these new enhancements are a welcome addition by many fans of the handheld. Despite some take away like the inability to play older gameboy advance games. However, it is not a total lost except for the most extreme fans, but the game library of the Nintendo DSi is quite impressive in itself. So yet again, Nintendo is strengthening itself as king of the portable handhelds.
