Rugged Technology and Mobile Workers

By Allyson Westcot

Experts predict that most employees will be mobile by the end of the next decade, and that up to 1 billion people will work remotely in the future. As the technology keeps improving, there will be even more options for mobile workers than there are now. Whether it's trekking thru a rainforest for research or checking a patient's medical records in a speeding ambulance, durable laptops can get the job done.

Petroleum and Natural Gas

Many workers are mobile. Someone that inspects derricks, for instance, needs rugged technology. An ultra-rugged tablet would be excellent for this type of work. When there could be liquids or gasses present in a no-spark area, a completely sealed rugged laptop or tablet PC is a total must. This could permit workers the ability to communicate without mobile phones, because these phones can spark and become a risk in certain situations.

Healthcare

Rugged technology is required for hospitals, ORs and other clinical settings. The comuter must be properly cleaned and sealed so that it can't harbor bacteria that would make patients sick. A tablet with a touch sensitive screen is perfect for fast paced work in ERs and ambulances, too. Mobile clinical employees who go from place to place checking on patients can keep their records recent with rugged technology, as well.

Armed Services and Law Enforcement

Cops use rugged computers in their autos to do everything from running license plates to creating reports. They can get up-to-date information on fugitives, emergencies, crimes-in-progress and arrest warrants. Other technology permits them to monitor traffic speed, film around their automobiles and keep communities safer. Army units use rugged technology for apparent reasonsâ€"regular PCs could not stand up to the abuse that rugged technology handles with no issues.

Emergency Teams

Whether teams need to rush to a fire or teams need to organize a relief effort for those who have been displaced due to a flood, quake or other natural disaster, rugged technology keeps communication open and info flowing. It's critical that laptops don't fail during these emergency situations. With durable portables, the failure rate is so tiny that emergency teams can rely on the technology.
