Secure Your Documents with PCI Compliance

By Rhonda Benjamin

The PCI Compliance council, also known as Payment Card Industry Compliance council, was formed on 15th of Dec, 2004 to protect an individual's ATM, credit, and debit card information. As defined by the PCI Compliance Council, this standard was created to reduce the credit card fraud due to its exposure. PCI Compliance validation is done annually by Qualified Security Assessors for the organizations that handle huge volumes of transactions. In the month of September, 2006, the PCI Compliance standard was updated to version 1.1. Minor revisions were made to the version 1.0.

These safety standards are known as PCI Compliance which is the standard code of information security for the organizations that are providing and dealing with the information of the users who are bearing credit cards.

The objective of PCI Compliance is to build and maintain a secure network. This is being performed by maintaining a highly active firewall to protect the card holder's data. Passwords should be changed regularly, and default passwords as set by the company should not be used. Secondly, a card holder's data should be protected. This is performed by encrypting the transmission of cardholder data across open, public networks. Thirdly, maintaining a Vulnerability Management Program. This is achieved by maintaining highly reliable antivirus software on all systems commonly affected by malware. Maintaining and developing secure systems and applications.

Organizations which are not following PCI Compliance are subject to fines if any kinds of client complaints are filed against them. This program is started as five different programs for Visa Card, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and JCB data security respectively. Installing a stable and good quality firewall and maintaining it properly will help the organization to secure the data stored in one's data stored in his or, her credit card.

PCI Compliance is working solely to stop the card frauds. It will be a great boon to the whole world both for the customers as well as for the merchants. If you own a business, you should be sure that you are complying to all the areas of PCI compliance and the PCI standards.
