For a long time, my most loathed activity at work was doing project charters, not because they are not a good tool for advancing project, but mostly because they took a lot of time to do, and that was time that I did not have, until we were able to get a project charter template. I do not engage in hyperbole when I say that when we finally got the software, it was as if a huge weight had been lifted off of my shoulders and I was suddenly vastly more efficient and able to create more project ideas that I could pitch, something that was able to start my rise through the ranks at work.
This is not to say that getting to where I am now was a simple matter of getting some software, I had to negotiate and ingratiate myself to people in order to convince them that spending a little cash in order to save time down the road was a good thing. For me, this pretty much meant assigning myself another project, and I even went so far as to construct a project charter for this unofficial project, planning on taking it to my boss to help me convince him that buying this project charter template software was the right move for my company.
Basically, my little presentation consisted of using a project charter to demonstrate the amounts of time that we would save versus going on without it as we had for so long. I flung myself into this heart and soul because I hate wasting time, even if I am getting paid for doing so and I wanted to be able to save the company time and money in an efficient way.
My presentation actually went really well, and my boss was rather impressed with my efforts and dedication to increasing office efficiency and saving the company money. It was decided to move ahead with the project, and I was assigned to find the most cost-effective software, which was no predicament as I had already come across it in an Internet search and with some comparisons of the different software available.
Part of my initial presentation also involved getting some more software that was going to help us shorten the time we needed to take in making project timelines, another one of my pet peeves. By downloading and installing both programs, I was suddenly very popular with the people in the office who were heavily involved with the different projects we regularly had assigned. Not long after I had gotten the software installed, I was put on another project and I was excited to make both a project timeline and a project charter with the new program, and it was very rewarding to see how efficient it was and how much time it saved me.
