How To Gain Computing Efficiency With Hosted Virtual Desktops

By Melanie Vaughn

Computer networking is perhaps one of the most powerful and essential concepts that are revolutionizing the computing process. In this way virtualization is currently possible. With the use of this technique remotely located resources can be shared as if they were physically present. Hosted virtual desktops represent such an implementation.

The client server model of computing as the basis of such a technique has a number of benefits. Most of these are made possible through the server operating system components. Such a component is like the virtual desktop interface (VDI). This model also enables the implementation of a centralized resource management approach. This will cover such details like data and resources management as well as security.

The VDI will enable a network administrator to initiate and host various user sessions all running on the server. This component of the server operating system allows the operator to identify and assign different user sessions which can then be executed in shareable mode. By using this approach the user will have their own session that is transparently executing on the server as though it was on their personal computer.

In this way those powerful resource hungry applications can be executed on thin client. The configuration enables the server to run the applications in the background a process that is performed on behalf of the thin client. This is the case because the application may outstrip the thin client resources as far as memory and processor power is concerned. In this case a smart phone or similar mobile computing device is a typical thin client within such a configuration.

Virtualization has been considerably used to implement such applications like cloud computing. With such an arrangement powerful applications that require enormous processor resources and considerable memory can be executed remotely by the thin client. This kind of arrangement has made smart phones to become very useful mobile computing devices. Generally the hardware software and services are available and are hired out at a fee and on demand making it economical for clients.

Therefore it is now possible to remotely accomplish computing requirements that would otherwise require powerful hardware. As such virtualization ensures that the remote server covers all the resource hungry applications and sends the results back. Most of these applications cannot be handled by the thin client.

A number of arrangements are possible with this VDI enabled sessions. It may be possible to have a centralized approach where all the processing is exclusively carried out on the remote server. Alternatively a remote synchronization approach entails duplicating copies of such instances from the server onto the client machine. Whichever the approach implemented the client is oblivious of the fact that the sessions are running remotely and assumes that they are actually local.

Generally a typical use of these hosted virtual desktops involves different administrators who want to share out different tasks. With the VDI application each one of them appropriately run their sessions on the server under the supervision of the kernel. Therefore in this way the various tasks are distinctly implemented by each of these users logged onto the server.
