Risk The Game Online

By Brian Tracker

If you have been alive since its introduction in 1957, you probably have heard of the Game of Risk. However, what exactly is it, and how and why would one want to play it in today's age of high tech gaming wizardry?

Describing it this simply does not do the game any real justice but the gist is that you try to dominate the world while battling against other opponents which may be human friends or for the more die hard, against the computer.

The game of Risk starts when all players roll the dice to see who will be the first to take their turn, once this is decided the participants can begin claiming the territories on the playing board which are divvied out via a deck of playing cards which are dealt to the players. Play continues in a clockwise direction once the initial dice winner has taken his turn with each person placing color coded 'armies' onto the countries to denote their ownership.

Each territory comes with designated cards, which are dealt to each player appropriately. Once game play has commenced, each player will take turns to try and amass as many armies as possible in as much territory as possible while attacking opponents and commandeering enemy territory. Of course, defense is just as important as offense. Each player must command his or her armies to prevent the other players from seizing their territory. The last player standing wins.

The game itself is designed for between 2 and 6 participants, all of whom try to take over the entire map of the world by destroying their opponents. Although this is of course originally a classic board game, the online versions have now brought this exciting game to the younger generation of today.

With the newer online and downloadable versions of Risk available it is no problem to play against either artificial intelligence or even better, players from all over the world. When internet access is not available, playing against computer generated opponents at various skill levels can be a great challenge while you wait to play against humans. Another great benefit to the online Risk game is the element of community. It is quite easy to find forums that are solely dedicated to Risk type games where you can meet new friends and learn more about Risk strategy.

Truly this is a lengthy and complicated outfit for the contemplative gamer, much like a larger scale version of chess. As such, many a Risk strategy guide exists to guide novices and old hands alike in their quests for world domination. Check out totaldiplomacy.com, boardgames.about.com, or boardgamebeast.com for some killer strategy guides to get you eliminating your opponents' territory like a champ.

The great thing about risk and similar games to it, is the way they allow players to learn and grow with experience. It is well known that no 2 games will ever be the same while playing this game due to differing playing styles and attitudes. The dice do of course add an element of chance to the game but experience will usually win through, proving that this is truly a game of the mind once the basics are learned.
