Still other buildings get built on special terrain which is scattered around the world. Building the right type of building on the right type of terrain can give you a powerful edge.
Your armies also need leaders. Leaders appear randomly, although you can sometimes choose one at the start of the game. At other times they will seek you out and offer their services for a fee. Equipping them with magical gear, then forging their abilities in the crucible of battle gives them incredible value against both computer-controlled forces and other Great Mages.
Your armies are composed of both mundane and fantastical units, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. All units can improve their stats as they become more experienced, and some earn combat spells too.
